You can work this out by finding their common denominator.

6/7<7/8
48/56<49/56

You know that 1/8 is smaller than 1/7 because if you divide something into 8 parts, the parts will be smaller than if you divide something into 7 parts.

6/7 is 1/7 less than a whole, and 7/8 is 1/8 less than a whole. Since 1/8 is smaller than 1/7, 7/8 is closer to a whole than 6/7 is, and is therefore bigger.

6/7 is smaller because see if u do find common denominator than it would be 48/56 and 7/8 would be 49/56

Because 1/7 is larger than 1/8...just as 1/2 is larger than1/3.

Thus to take 1/7 from the whole is to take more than to take 1/8 from the whole

Therefore 7/8 is more than 6/7.

1) Let U = (7/8) - (6/7)

2) U = ( 7 * 7 ) / 56 - (6 * 8) / 56 = (49 - 48) / 56 = 1 / 56

3) Since U > 0 (7/8) must be greater than (6/7)

it is smaller becasue if you take the lcd(lowest common denominator) it would be 48 over 56 and 7 over eight would be 49/56 so than 48 would be less than forty nine.So that is why 6/7 is less than 7/8. ANother way is using fraction bars. Also because 8 is bigger than 6...lol...no its because 6/7 is basically 6.5 and 7/8 is 7.5....about a size different. it is less because ..................

.1-1/7 is bigger than 1-1/8 because we took a smaller part to the first.
