Physical stress produces stomach acid and pain. Are there any herbal remedies that decrease acid like the pharmaceutical proton pump inhibitors or something better?

Anything that is high in chlorophyll should reduce acidic conditions. You can get chlorophyll capsules or liquids from a health food store. Also wheatgrass, barley grass and spirulina powders and tablets should help, very nutritive too. Basicaly any food that is green should reduce stomach acid. As said above, slippery elm and marshmallow should be very soothing from the pain.

Or you could try and reduce your stress levels and treat the cause and not the symptoms. A good vitamin B complex supplement, St John's Wort liquid or tablets, chamomile, withania, oats, korean/panax ginseng, are all very helpful. These can be found at a herbalist with a dispensary.

I found a reputable site for some good info: Reno Intergrative Medicine

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera has historically been for its properties of soothing, cleansing, and helping the body to maintain healthy tissues. This plant has a reputation of facilitating digestion, aiding blood and lymphatic circulation, as well as kidney, liver, and gall bladder functions. Aloe contains at least three anti-inflammatory fatty acids that are helpful for the stomach, small intestine, and colon. It naturally alkalizes digestive juices to prevent heartburn. It also relieves swelling and pain in burns. A newly discovered compound in aloe, acemannan, is currently being studied for its ability to strengthen the immune system.

Peppermint

Peppermint calms the stomach, intestinal tract, and the nervous system. It comforts the stomach and nourishes the salivary glands to help with digestion. It has astringent properties and soothes the nervous system. It is extremely helpful in calming a cough and used in aromatherapy, it loosen congestion.

peppermint oil capsuals or aloe vera capsuals. Peppermint is aimed more at calming and soothing the stomach (peppermint tea can also be benneficial aswell). Aloe sooths the stomach and also the digestive tract as stress can also produce symptoms of 'irritable bowl syndrome'.
Also remember to eat foods low in acid, completly avoid caffine and alcohol, and eat a good diet low in fat with plenty of fibre.

In the morning and evening take a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar. The theory is that your body is not producing enough antacid to decrease the amount of acid happening. By putting the apple cidar vinegar into your system you are promoting the production of your body's own antacid naturally.

By using over-the-counter antacids you are further inhibiting your body to produce its own. You body may become used to the outside influence and the problem will become worse.

I hope this helps. Bragg's raw apple cidar vinegar is the best. You can get it at your local healthfood store.
