Mostly children play with toy hippos, so I guess they are more appealing to them if they are colorful.

no five year old (or fourteen year old who's still into stuffed animals) likes brown or gray! They're not focused on accuracy! They're focused on whether or not they'll be able to sell their product! When little kids (and middle schoolers) pick stuffed animals, they go for the soft ones with pretty colors.
