You cannot run standard gears backwards because now you are running on the backside of the geartooth which the curve or helical is not designed to take the pressure needed to work properly. The biggest problem if you tried that would be trying to get it outta gear to nuetral.
Buy a counter rotating gearset kit

you chould change the push/ pull in the binnacle control and swith the prop, but the engine woudl not run as good...depending on your engine just swap out the lower unit..most outboards do the counter clockwise rotation in the lower unit no tthe engine

it may damage your engines as usual reverse gear ratio is bigger and it's need more engine revs to achive same props rotation as forward gear.By the way you also need counter rotation blade props as the current one may not possible to be installed back ward. For instance to reduce prop torque steering usually occur on twin engine installation, you may try to install fin tab under cavitation plate end and adjust it accordingly, if the boat veer to left you adjust the fin to right angle & vise versa.Adjust gradualy untill you get the correct angle.

I'm not an expert on all engines but I remember Volvo out drives had a linkage in the out-drive that you could shift to give opposite rotation. Maybe yours has some thing similar. Check with the pro's.

to create reverse rotation you're close. since the engine turns in the right hand, one has to be geared to run in reverse. to do it so you won't ruin the gears there is a special bearing kit to add to one of the gearcases so it will be strong enough in reverse to handle the stress of forward rpm/power. i hope that makes sense. don't just run it in "reverse". it can't handle the torque.

because, most "Wheels" (props) can go in "Reverse" but, not as efficiently, as they can go forward, because of the "Rake" and "Pitch".
