I know that the ship departed San Fran ,headed to alcatraz, and then to the islands of the Pacific to bring soldiers home after WWII.

This ship is the Pomona Victory (with an O, not an A, after the P). Searching for its history didn't yield me anything specific — there is a picture of the ship and it also appears in the list of victory ships.
