thanks

Not just diet Pepsi, but all sodas I would imagine.

Gasses (like CO2) are more soluble at low temperatures and high pressures.

What gives the soda its bubbles (carbonation) is the Carbon Dioxide, CO2, which is dissolved in the water.
At low temperatures, the solubility of gasses increase and more CO2 can be dissolved in the soda. After the cold soda is sealed up inside the bottle, it is alright to let the temperature rise since the CO2 is not trapped inside. As the temperature rises, some of the dissolved CO2 will come out of solution and collect above the liquid inside the bottle. As more and more of this gas escapes, the pressure inside the bottle rises. But equilibrium will develop since gasses are more soluble at high pressures than low pressures, eventually the pressure in the bottle will increase enough so that no more CO2 will come out of solution. When you open the bottle up and relieve the pressure in the bottle, the CO2 will begin to bubble out of the soda since the equilibrium has been disturbed.

The solubility of gasses in water is lowered by heating.

Here is an illustrative example: if you have a nuclear reactor, and water is heated up and then runs back out of the reactor steaming hot, there is very little dissolved oxygen in that water. As a result the fish in the river that hot water is discharged into cannot get enough oxygen, so they die. This is called thermal pollution.

In the case of cola manufacturers, the cola has no fizz unless there is carbon dioxide dissolved in the liquid. Manufacturing and bottling under very low temperatures ensures a good fizz.
