I like to read in bed, just so I'll nod off and sleep peacefully. Reading clears your mind of all your worries. Instead you are focusing on the book and following the character. Gradually your natural tiredness will put you to sleep. Remember you need 8 hours of sleep a night and I've read that teens need even more since they are going through growth spurts.

Oh yes! It is so common it is difficult to express. There was even an old book of folk remedies that suggested the way to fight insomnia is to read a book, preferrably the Bible!
Bu that isn't your question. Your question is how to AVOID going to sleep. Okay, here are some things I've discovered:
1 - Don't make reading the last thing you do. No matter what you do at the end of the day, you are going to be tired. So don't procrastinate and wait until you are already tired before starting.
2 - Don't read books in a place that is designed for sleeping! In other words, never read a book on your bed unless you plan on going to sleep. Also, never read a book in your bedroom. Find a place to read where you know you have to do work, not where it's designed to do everything except work.
3 - Do something else besides reading, while you are reading. For example, perish the thought, take notes! Make comparisons, write a response log, write a summary at the end of every chapter or 4 pages or so. Not only will this help keep you awake it will allow you to have notes for studying before that big test. Do something besides just reading! Even eating or drinking while you are reading helps.
4 - Change your mind-set. Right now you are thinking, "okay, I'm going to read so I'm going to fall asleep. I hate reading. I hate boring books. I hate doing this. I'd rather be with my friends. I'd rather be watching t.v. I'd rather be having a root canal with no novacaine." Change your mind set to finding out what is in the book. Ask questions as you are reading. Why did the character do this? Why did the character say that? What is going to happen next? What other story/movie does this remind me of? What would I do if I were in that person's shoes.
Keep your mind working and keep moving forward. Be an interactive reader. Don't just sit there on the bed like a lump and suffer. Make it real! Make it part of your life.

Obtain and follow the advice of "How to Read a Book" by Mortimer J. Adler and Charles Van Doren. And read while you walk. It is a good way to get some exercize and keep the blood pumping. You can also read a book out loud into a tape recorder, make an MP3 and listen to yourself on your IPod while you take a run. This way you read the same material twice - in essence. A much better way to absorb the information. Gives your brain twice the opportunity to get it right.

I can often fall asleep while reading. I think it means you're not getting enough sleep regularly, or you have an association between reading and sleep. the first one can be fixed by seeing a doctor- I heard of a study where they put patients in sleep conducive environments, they would sleep for periods of 14-15 hours until they had 'made up' for the regular sleep they had been missing, and then they would go back to a regular sleep pattern of around 8 hours of sleep a night.

I can sit in my chair and read with no problem, but if I think I'm going to go to bed and read for a while that last about 15 minutes and I'm out.
