Why do BMW fans compare a v10 engine to a v8 engine. Even then, a v8 Mercedes and Porsche engine preform similar to the bigger BMW engine. So when Mercedes makes their E 55 in a 10 cylinder what then for BMW owners. A slower M 5 & M 6. Also, why does Mercedes Benz have more GT and Formula 1 victories than BMW?

That is because BMW cars are not only emphasized on speed. I have owned a Mercedes and a BMW. The Mercedes had slightly better acceleration, but BMW had better handling, stil accelerated well, and had much better braking. I don't know about a Porshe

Straight line speed isn't everything, as you know... BMW //M cars are most definately better handling performance cars when compared to a Mercedes, for example... M3 vs C55? M5 vs E55? Come on ;)

The BMW always outperform Mercedes AMG cars on the track and are particularly more engaging for the drivers, given that all Mercedes cars (including AMG's) have too much electronic assistance which cannot be fully turned off (such as brake assist)

So, if you want a rocket to go in a straight line and offer decent handling, sure go for the Mercedes... However, if you want a true all-round high performance sports car, then BMW is the only way to go..

P.S I did not discuss Porsche simply because its a completely different category of car if you ask me, i was inferring to the comparison between high performance sedans and coups offered by both MB and BMW..

Both Porsche and BMW are built for handling, not straight line speed, but ok, let's compare engines...

BMW V10: 5.0 liters generating 500 hp = 100 hp/l
BMW V8: 4.0 liters generating 420 hp = 105 hp/l
BMW I6: 3.2 liters generating 343 hp = 107.2 hp/l

M-B "63" V8: 6.2 liters generating 507 hp = 81.8 hp/l
M-B "55" V8: 5.5 liters generating 355 hp = 64.5 hp/l

Porsche H6: 3.8 liters generating 355 hp = 93.4 hp/l
Porsche V8: 4.5 liters generating 340 hp = 75.6 hp/l

So every M engine has a higher output than any offering from Porsche or M-B. In terms of handling, an M6 does lose out to a 911, but then an M6 has 4 seats and a trunk. The only fair comparison between the two brands would be the Z4 M-Coupe/Roadster versus the Cayman/Boxster, and either of those would be a driver's race.

The McLaren F1 is powered by none other than a BMW M powered engine. Put any Merc up against it, except for maybe the SLR-McLaren, but any Merc from the time of the F1 would be blown away.
