I would start by buying bigger cans- it's cheaper by volume.
I like to wait until they are 6mo to start cereal, but if you feel like he could handle swallowing it then feel free. I don't like to use any kind of solid until they can sit up on their own and really use their tounge to move around food and swallow.

The 14 cans of formula doesn't really help because I have no idea how big the cans are. My 4 month old drinks 30 oz of formula each day.
You should wait until a minimum of 4 months old before starting cereal. Then you need to look for signs of readiness. Does he still have a strong tongue thrust? If so, then starting solids will be really frustrating because he'll push most, if not all, of it right out of his mouth. Also, can he sit up supported by something? If he hasn't developed strong enough stomach muscles to keep from flopping forward then he's not ready. And can he turn his head away when he is full? If so, then that is a sign he may be ready to start solids.

I've had the same doctor for all four of my children and he says that introducing cereal at 4 months is OK, especially if they are drinking so much formula. Rumor has it that if infants start cereal before 6 months they become picky eaters but 4 kids later, I don't find that to be true.

Some doctors say you can begin a small amount of cereal at 4 months, some say 6 months. My son's doctor told me once their drinking 36 oz of formula a day to start introducing solids. It seems your child is at that point.

you can start feeding some solid/mushy foods at three months, i did that with my child, i smushed a banana, someorange juice and some wheat crackers together and they love it, if you have a blender you can start with some foods, non that gives/create gas , that will give the baby cramps, start with ones a day and build it up slowly
good luck
