I'm trying to remember the name of a basketball coach my dad used to rave about all the time. Dad died in 1999, but last night while watching the UNC/USC game, I was trying to remember the name of his favorite coach. I realize "very famous" is subjective, but I'm just trying remember who dad loved. Thanks!

Frank McGuire's North Carolina team led by Lennie Rosenberg, Tommie Kean's, Pete Brennan, Joe Quigg, and Bob Cunningham won the 1956-57 national championship by defeating Kansas , led by Wilt Chamberlain in triple overtime. North Carolina had a thriller of a season and finished at 32-0 winning two triple overtimes in the finals. thanks for asking.

Some recent coaches I can think of are Dean Smith, Matt Doherty, and Roy Williams... I think all are still living, but it might be Dean Smith. I'll look harder and see if I can find more details for ya.

EDIT: These are UNC's all time head coaches:
1911-14 Nat Carmell
1915-16 Charles Doak
1916-19 Howell Peacock
1920-21 Fred Boye
1923-24 Norm Shepard (1 NC)
1924-25 Monk McDonald
1925-26 Harlan Sanborn
1926-31 James Ashmore
1931-35 George Shepard
1935-39 Walter Skidmore
1939-44 Bill Lange (1 Elite 8)
1944-46 Ben Carnevale (1 Finals appearance, a loss)
1946-52 Tom Scott
1952-61 Frank McGuire (1 NC, 1 1st round loss)
1961-97 Dean Smith (2 NC, 5 Finals Appearances, 15 Final 4, 19 Elite 8, 1 NIT Championship... by far the winningest UNC coach)
97-2000 Bill Guthridge (2 Final 4)
2000-03 Matt Doherty
04-present Roy Williams (1 NC)

It was probably Dean Smith. UNC was terrible before him. I know Dean Smith isn't dead though. Are you sure that the coach is dead? If he is then it is almost definitely Frank McGuire.

Frank McGuire. It's not Dean Smith - he's not dead.
