Yes you have to use super jump at the right point.

I've managed to get Mario about an inch or so past the flag but the game seems to 'pop' him back onto the flag at which point he slides down normally. I suppose if it wasn't for the game actually popping him back onto the flag he would defiantely make it over to the other side. As to whether it IS possible to get over the flag, I've heard rumors that you can and that he walks back to it and just hops onto the lower part of the flag then pulls it down..but that's just a rumor and I've never seen it done.

I have made it over the flag pole. It just pulled me back to where you hit the lowest part on the pole and get no points :.(

you simply cannot jump over the flag pole. The game doesn't allow it.

You have to gather speed by holding the "B" button when you run.
