some routine is inevitable to be somewhat productive, but extreme routine does really limit the creativity one may possess.

ABSOLUTELY and without a doubt.
I'm taking a "creativity and problem solving in the media" class and we've been analyzing the worlds most creative genuises and they all operated unconventionally. My professor recommends taking a different route every day to class, to work, wherever and not forming day to day routine or habits but being able to just take a different turn or see things a little different, changing your angle, eating somewhere different, going to sushi adn when they ask for your order say "surprise me." That sort of thing.
I love the spontaneity aspect of it- it really makes me observe details more and feel alive...the only problem is in such a busy world when little mundane urgent tasks loom large, it is very difficult not to have structure in your life in fear of forgetting to do things or running out of time. It is in finding that intricate balance that one can really thrive in his work. It also largely depends on what type of work you are doing and what style you do the best work in.

No. Perfect practice makes perfect. We can only approach that. So we practice and practice.
