Curious_one - you seem like a very scary lady...have you ever travled outside of the US?

The one and only reason politicians are in office is to SERVE THE PUBLIC! I can't believe how many people do not understand that. Serving their constituents is their one and only legitimate concern.
The whole point of government is to do things for the society which individuals cannot do on their won--like enact trade agreements with other nations, like provide oversight of corporations for the benefit of the masses...
If your elected official isn't going to work each and every day with the thought of how he can better your quality of life, he needs to lose his job.
And despite what you may believe, many countries have a better standard of living than we do-we do not rate well in many areas such as infant mortality, education, healthcare, environmental issues, and family issues.

They are busy trying to get re-elected. By "improving Americans quality of life" are you talking about eradicating the lower class? If so, that probably impossible. But to be fair to the politicians, they do move agendas in the Congress and pass bills that do effect the general population in a positive way. (If the law is deemed damaging by the executive to the public [also can be used as a political move], than that law is just not enforced by the executive branch) Now, if it would affect the constituents in a bad way, than the member of Congress would not get re-elected. So their goal is to get re-elected, but they must please their constituents to do so. Therefore politicians do try to improve Americans status quo.

politicians should stay out of "improving" or whatever they want to call it in regards of quality of life in america. you already live in the best #$% country GOD ever gave to man, why do you want to mess it up with having politicians ruin everything for you under the guise of "improving" the "quality of life."
by birthright in the usa you are handed opportunities to make the most out of a FREE education system for 12 years and then among other opportunities to amass wealth, etc. take a visit to even some of our european friends and see what life is REALLY like there -- not so great -- you are at the government's mercy. USA is the best country GOD ever gave to man. Don't squander away your opportunities afforded to you by your birthright.

They are big business and theirs. Need anything else be said? We as American's should throw out the current two ruling parties and put in one that will do what we need to have done. The current parties are too busy trying to stab each other in the back when they should be paying attention to what their job is. We can make the change if we stand together but divided we will always lose. There is a middle ground that each of us must agree on and when we can agree on that middle ground then we will win not just as individuals but as American's.

Because, the first job of a politician, any politician, in a democracy is to ensure job security. The truth is that when there's a conflict between properly serving the public and solidifying there job security, they will ALWAYS pick solidifying their job security. That's why democracy is the worst form of government...besides all the other kinds (quote from Winston Churchill).

YES they are actually working and paying themselves on our behalf. 'Of the people, FOR the people & BY the people, and WE the people are loosing. Cheney has $94 mil Bush $20+mil Pelosi why do they want to be in govt--for who's best interest? IF OUR PROTECTION & best interest was on top WE WOULDNT BE LETTING IN TERRORISTS ACROSS THE BORDER.
