We call it 5 o clock shadow because allot of men have fast growing facial hair that starts to show in the late afternoon after shaving that morning. Its does not happen very often with young men but as we age it seem that the hair grows faster.
The term has become a generic name for anyone that has short facial hair

It's at around 5 that the stubble starts to show. Guys shave in the morning and by 5 oclock, the hairs back!

I'm not a man but, it's called five o clock shadow because most guys grow a healthy amount by five o clock that day if they haven't shaved since the previous morning.

It comes from when a man would shave every day but by the end of the day he had some stubble making the hairy parts of his face darker like a shadow.

That is because, at five o clock, most men will have their beard grown into a stubble even though they shaved it clean in the morning.
The dark discoloration makes it look like a shadow under the chin. Nice to look at, feels like sandpaper.
