Who are some famous jazz trombonists? Which in your opinion is the best and why? My friend said I could get better at playing jazz if I listen to more jazz. Is this true? Any tips on playing jazz? How can you get better at improvisation? Any info on jazz or trombones will help. Thanks! ^__^

I do practice at least half an hour a day. I just want to improve more. There is always room for improvement.

I'm in the symphonic and jazz band too! I'm in 8th grade though.

Listen to Jimmy Knepper on the Charles Mingus album called Tonight at Noon, especially the song Invisible Lady.

Of course it's true that you'll get better at jazz if you listen to jazz. All the jazz greats are very aware of all those who came before. Jazz is not just entertainment, it's an important part of our culture.

If you think you can just get better by practicing what your teacher/book tells you, your going to be a real boring player. You need to absorb everything and make it your own.
Doesn't your teacher turn you on to the jazz masters? If not your teacher doesn't care about jazz at all.

Just go to a great live jazz show, and you won't have to ask any more questions like this.

Yes, listening to jazz trombonists will help your playing. Tommy Dorsey and J.J. Johnson are a great start for just listening. Also Bill Watrous is probably considered the best living jazz trombonist and has lots of CDs available.

As far as improving your playing, keep it simple and try to jam to any songs that you hear. It's great for improving your ear and your confidence.

Good luck.
