It's just a name used by many people that started long ago. It's a familiarity thing. My daughters are 18 and 30, and I call THEM 'DUDE!'

TOO funny! It's dude for everyone at my daughters, too. Even the baby (22 months) calls people dude. That's what started it. Everyone wanted to hear her say it.
