Really !!! It should be named "Cheers" where everyone knows your name.

It is called alcoholics anonymous because you are going into place and admitting you have a problem and in trying to get help for your problem you tell very intimate stories about your life to help you cope. the people that attend these meetings with are not suppose to tell anyone outside these who attends these meeting and the stories they hear.

Because you don't have to give your last name or any other details that would help to identify you. Just a label so people don't have to call you "Hey, you".

And after all, anyone can say their name is Jo(e) even if it's really Rupert, or Alphonse or Bertha (if Jo stands for Josephine). Whose gonna know?

because that's about as much personal information you are required to reveal to the general audience. They don't take roll call or keep public membership lists. You are not even required to give your real first name if you don't wish to.

alcoholics anonymous is based anonimimity outside of the fellowship, if you choose to maintain it. inside the fellowship, a person sharing or etc. must itentitfy who he or she is and the nature of their disease.
