Terms of Endearment - great story and acting about mother/daughter relationship
Fried Green Tomatoes - racism, empowerment, great cast
The English Patient - doomed love affair, great case
Steel Magnolias - relationships, great cast
Stepmom - great acting and story line

or the Notebook - love story with two great leads

I just saw a movie on limited release in the US -- Behind the Gates -- based on a true story of a priest and a teacher who were in Rwanda at the time of the genocide. It's told from their perspective and whether to leave or to stay and be killed. It's hard not to cry when you know what happens in the end.

My favorite tear jerker movie of all I've seen surprises even me: it's 'Jerry Maguire'. This movie (by director Cameron Crowe and starring Tom Cruise, Rene Zellweger and Cuba Gooding Jr.) has me sobbing every time I watch it. Yes, I do tear up when Jerry interrupts the women's meeting to look for his wife. And then confronts her declaring his love publicly. This even after he gave her the ultimate commitment and married her! Goes to show you that three little words, 'You complete me' pack more of a wallop than the two little words, 'I do'.
What makes me dissolve in a puddle is the scene where Cuba Gooding Jr. has just made a major leap forward in his career. Outside the locker room, the press and tv cameras are waiting and he knows that he'll never have to worry about his contract negotiations going south again. He's on top of the world, man! He looks over the shoulders of the TV camera men and spies his agent, Jerry, off to the side, waiting and enjoying every moment just as much as he. He plunges through the crowd and they embrace. What a moment, what a buddy bonding moment! Everything that Jerry ever advised him about and waited with him to happen has come true, while Jerry struggled. I'm sobbing and sobbing because it's such a moment of love between friends - not a hint of gayness to it - just love, pure love. Wow! Everyone should have a friend like that.

What makes a good tearjerker:

.One foolheaded moment when one of the two lovers makes a regrettable mistake and it costs the two their love. Yet, one continues to pine for the other, and the other is too proud to make amends. We must watch their lives run in parallel, never seeing them re-unite and heal each other's scarred hearts.
.A meddling parent who has plans for the son or daughter, and underhandedly thwarts the romance. Throw in class differences and prejudice.
.Family factions at war with each other. Their differences boil over and mindlessly destroy the true lovers' chance for an innocent, wonderful romance.
.After the two true lovers are separated, she finds herself in front of a man who just happens to be there for her. And in a moment of frustration and haste, she says "Yes" to the available suitor. The same thing could be so for the young male true lover with an available woman. One of the women gets pregnant, and the true lover returns to see the damage made permanent for the sake of the child.
.Something happens by treacherous fate to one of the lovers, after we've invested our emotional energy in them. We hurt because something fantastic and wonderful is ripped away from us, leaving us bereft.
.Their love for each other is pure and true, but one lover's love is not enough to save the other lover from himself/herself.
.War takes him away from her, at the height of their love.
.Somehow, this wonderful love cannot be recaptured, and we feel the pain of love lost in our own lives.

Two newer tearjerkers:
The Notebook (2004). The story around his letters.

Nuovo Cinema Paradiso (Italian, new, 170-minute version, 2002)

Los Amantes del Círculo Polar (1998, Spanish with English subtitles, "Lovers of the Arctic Circle", Najwa Nimri, Fele Martinez)

Some older, classic tearjerkers:

West Side Story (1961, Richard Beymer, Natalie Wood) The entire script is sung, and the music is by Leonard Bernstein.

Splendor in the Grass (1961, Natalie Wood, Warren Beatty)

Romeo & Juliet (1968, Leonard Whiting, Olivia Hussey)

Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (1964, French, "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Catherine Deneuve, Nino Castelnuovo) The entire dialogue is sung.
