I'm 24 weeks pregnant .. and did the 1 hour gestational diabetes test 3 days ago. My doctor called yesterday and said my level was 158 and needs to be below 140 and I have to go in next week (after 3 days of a special diet) and re-test doing a 3 hour glucose test.
Is 158 considered really high??
Has anyone else ever experienced this??
Is there a chance if I watch my carb and sugar intake and exercise more it will clear up??
Will it cause harm to my baby??

I feel horrible. I read up on it (online) and it says if I do have gestational diabetes that my baby's pancreas will have to work harder. I am so sad thinking that something I might have done (getting the gest. diabetes) is causing my little boys new little organs to have to work harder. And the thought of him having any complications after birth is just heartbreaking.

I'm way stressed .. and would greatly appreciate answers from anyone who might have experienced this. Thanks!!

I am 20 weeks and 2 days pregnant and I have gestational diabetes. I actually use insulin to control mine. My numbers were at 233. So 158 is not that high. I have a whole article posted on blogs on my myspace page if you want to take a look at it. It is very informative.

Usually it can be controlled by changing your diet. You may not even need medicine.

I had GD when I was pregnant with my son. I did not know I had GD until my 8th month. If I could go back, I would do what I am suggesting to you which is to monitor eating foods that have a high glycemic load and try and avoid those which will make your blood sugar levels shoot up. Anything with carbs usually has a high glycemic load so keep an eye on carb intake. Get regular exercise. 158 is not exceptionally high so now that this is being monitored you should be fine and your baby should be just fine. I would suggest breast feeding your baby as well if you're thinking about that as a possibility :)

My boy who was a 10 pound plus baby (because of the GD he was pretty big) is now a 15 year old who never had any serious medical issues as a child. I hope this gives you some peace of mind.

Some women are able to get things under control through dietary changes alone, while some need insulin.

A lot of women go for the second test and things turn out fine.

A friend of mine just had a pregnancy where she developed gestational diabetes. Hers was quite a severe case and she ended up delivering a 10.5lb baby nearly a month before her due date, and the baby is just fine now (1 month old).

I personally didn't but my sister in law had GD with both of her pregnancies. She was able to control it with diet and she had to check her blood sugar every day. Both of her children are beautiful and healthy. Absolutely NOTHING wrong. People say GD babies are born bigger but her babies were 7lb and 6 lbs. Not big at all, perfect sizes. It is also possible that your test was a false high, those do happen. Don't worry too much either way. Your baby will do just fine.

When I was pregnant with my twins i was told that i had gestational diabetes and i was on bed rest in the hospital and they put me on all kinds of diet modifications, which is fine for that but then they decided to do the three hour one and it came back negative, that also happened to my aunt and 2 friends of mine, so make sure you have them do the 3 hour one. just try to stay calm although it may be hard to do. good luck and congrats!

First, dont blame yourself. I had a friend that was nuerotic about being the "perfect' pregnant girl and i swear she had every complication in the book-- including diabetes.

Be careful about what you eat for the next few days and then take your doctor's advice. LOTS of women get GD and their babies are perfectly healthy-- I know my friend's was!

Don't stress!! Alot of women myself included have "failed" the one hour test and went on to pass the 3 hour. I have had it happen twice!
Between now and the 3 hour test think about how bad stress is for your little one and take it easy.
