Why do people bite their nails when they are alone?

People will be sitting in a room and they will bite their nails. then when some one comes in they will stop.

nerves and agitation. You get bored and have nothing to do to occupy your mind, but speaking interupts this action. Watch this person when they're watching television or sitting in a classroom. They usally will be biting on a pen, figiting with their fingers, jiggling their leg, or whatever. You could also notice that they may twitch or shake--like they can't keep there hand steady if they just hold it up flat. You could say this is like they're on drugs, but even those that aren't on drugs have this agitation.

well, this is because biting ur nails can seem embarrassing, since it is seen as disgusting and uneducated. lol, when they do it alone, nobody sees them so they feel comfortable doing something disgusting alone lol

It's like picking your nose. Nobody wants to see it. It is part habitual and part instinctual to want to groom yourself but it not something us humans do not do in front of each other. I can name many of things we will do by ourselves but never in front of anyone.
