Tales of Mystery and Terror (a friend visiting his old comrade in his old house to pay his condolences of some sort, then 'something' happens), The Cask of Amontillado (not your typical murder story...really nice), or any story by Edgar Allan Poe will do.
I could give more, but you did say you want some short ones.^.^
You could try 'Man in the Iron Mask', but yeah, the movie sorta ruined the surprise. Those by Mary Higgins Clark are also nice, that is, if you want light mystery. Edgar Allan Poe's stories are rather dark and quite psychological. Just take your pick.

Anything by Agatha Christie. Murder on the Orient Express is one of her best. Also try And Then There Were None.

personally, i love sherlock holmes. i think all of his stories are under 200 pages. i got a book that had all of the stories in it and just read them slowly over time. i was really nice.

Books by way of Brad Thor, in case you get them in the workstation version, they are gonna be like 500 pages long. yet in general variations they are in basic terms approximately 3 hundred pages long. the 1st e book is Lions of Lucerne.

Josephine Tey, if you've never read her, is a nice writer to discover.
