They could promote and pass such legislation in a heartbeat if they wanted. But capitalism isn't about taking care of the workforce. Capitalism is about making more money for the capitalist. A living wage runs counter to that purpose.

[Edit: I don't come close to earning what you do. When I read your question, it would never occurred to me that someone earning $80 grand/yr. would want the government to protect his/her salary. That's why I assumed that the question addressed minimum wage. Why is the federal government, in your opinion, supposed to make sure that an individual's wages increase with the COL? Why isn't that the concern of the employer?]

No, politicians should not. Instead, individuals should spend no more than a few years earning at the minimum wage level. Minimum wage is for newcomers to the job market.
I know a young man who earned only his GED [and he regrets his stupidity in not receiving a high school diploma]. He's earning $16/hour 5 days a week, $24/hour on Saturdays, and $32.50 on Sundays in a manufacturing job [with benefits]. Does he like having 6- or 7-day work week? No, but he knows he's lucky, just as well as he knows that it was a choice that he unknowingly made when he goofed off in high school.

increasing wages will call for more jobs being dropped. think about it. a business has to raise wages on its employess from profits. that means more money can go in the pockets of some, and because not everyone cannot get raises they have to be fired (especially in small businesses), profits also go to production and equipment as before it goes to wages. in my opinion we need minimum government involvement

want to cope with rising living costs? stop buying SUVS, going to the movies and eating out everynight. just a thought
