Hi, I am in the UK where a home carer is a person who cares for old folk in their own home (you Americans do not speak real English, though it sounds the same!!). If you mean home cleaner, and I assume you are sub-contraced; ask for an employment contract which states job start time and end time but to include expected travel time between jobs. If you can meet these times by car AND meet them by cycling then there should not be a problem. You will have difficulties if you have to cycle 20 miles between locations. If you only have to travel 5 miles I am sure you can beat a car on a busy day. I used to cycle 15 miles to school every day and enjoyed it, I was fitter, more alert and happier than going by bus. Really, politely ask for a normal contract which includes specific work time and includes reasonably traveling between locations. Any firm wants to keep a good worker - but do not be subservient and imply that you really need the work regardless of the pay rate. Good luck.

provided you are not classed as self employed as many carers are these days then you are being discriminated against and as such you can ask you employers to put it in writing there intentions to cut your hours down and more to the point why,if you have been there for over twelve months then you can take them to arbitration via the jobcentre but you must have been employed for over twelve months and you must also get this in writing off you employer,it would also help you if you could get a couple or more of your clients to verify that you have never been late in all the time you have cared for them i think once you have done this your employer will back track i hope this advice is helpfull

God, girl, fight this tooth and nail. In the present environment of trying to cut down on fumes from petrol etc., you will have a good case. Seems to me your boss just wants to cut down on hours, full stop, and is using this as an excuse. If you can prove that cycling does not delay your getting to a job, your hours cannot be cut for that reason. Fight it, in a tribunal if necessary.
