I don't think its a matter of troop deployment alone, its the whole construct of the military of the UK and the US that makes a draft/conscription unnecessary. While our troop numbers may not match the likes of China with literally millions in active service, our technology advancement makes military might.

Conscription may also cause some people to detest joining and cause apathetic responses towards war. At least with the current situation, you know whats coming to you if you sign up, and only you can be held responsible. Factions may divide people too, between those that want to be there for support and those that don't want to be there.

We're not at any point where we need a draft (though the idea of mandatory national service isn't a bad one, along the same lines as Israel, Switzerland and other countries). The problems our military have today are more about troop allocation than raw numbers. And with the military technology today, we don't need the same massive numbers as in the past.

What we do need is for the Pentagon and White House to let our troops fight without PC constraints.

National Service would be illegal now-breaches human rights.

I am 25 and I certainly would not join the military.I have no interest in risking my life for the idiotic schemes of fools like Bliar.

You could try but why should anyone go to war just 'cos the US and UK are now in a mess. If they give me a gun i'd make them regret it. Bad enough fighting against taxes that i don't even know what i'm paying for!

National service, no, But automatic enrolment into the army for those found guilty of committing crimes yes, That way we can kill two birds with one stone, firstly they would learn discipline secondly they'd be doing something useful for a change and who knows they may even come out the army better people !!!!

what's the point of joining up and then get killed, just send a couple of nukes over there and get rid of them
