I think Ben is on the right track. You can also try the old remedy of 1/2 cup baking soda down the drain followed by 1 cup vinegar. This will create a chemical reaction that will clean the pipes without damage to them like caustic agents. It is also a possibility that the plumber wore through a thin spot in your vent stack that allows vapors into you home.

Odor ban down the drain, but for eliminating odors around the house - use charcoal.
There are different types and some just work better. I have the perfect product that I've used for years and know dozens of other people that use it. It is a product called FRIDGE IT odor absorbers. It is a little purple cube with an incredible activated carbon filter inside that is really, really, great. It works so much better than baking soda and all those sprays and fragrances that just cover up smells and doesn't get rid of them. Also, alot of sprays have warning statements about being eye irritant. The carbon literally absorbs and eliminates the odors and works for a long time. Just place a few of these small cubes around problem area. I use this product everywhere including car(smoke and pet smells), storage, closets, my fridge and also under sinks, near trash and have friends that use it on cat litter box and also diaper pails - it's that good. I really recommend it. You can buy it in kitchen gadget sections in stores like walmart and linens and things. I also think camping world sells it. Someone else even said available in England. Definitely worth trying

There are 2 things you should do.
First, run water in the drain(s) the plumber cleaned for a minute or so. This will fill the pipes with water and stop the smell from the sewer leaching into the room.
Second, fill a few small bowls with white vinegar and place one in each of the rooms. Leave the apartment and find something to do for a few hours. Vinegar is a natural deodorizer... and no, it won't smell like vinegar when you get back.

Try pouring some water into the shower drain. The cleaning process may have removed the water in the trap allowing sewer gases to come up the drain.

To rid your drain system of these "organic" mal odors you need
an enzymatic drain cleaner. Enyzmes create millions of bacteria colonies (good bacteria) that break down organic waste much like our digestive system.
Coupled with a fresh scent Enz-Act will eliminate odors on contact and permanently!
Environmentally save and 100% biodegradable.
