Mary, Queen of Scots. Let's see what I remember about her from AP Euro... She was a Catholic queen of Scotland, cousin of Elizabeth I, the last Tudor monarch. Mary was a Stuart... When Elizabeth died, the Stuart (not Mary, she was executed) took the English throne.
Elizabeth was a protestant (her mother being Anne Boelyn, Henry the VIII's 2nd wife). Henry was the founder of the Protestant Church of England, or the Anglican Church, when the pope refused to divorce he and his first wife, Catherine, Queen of Aragorn (a Kingdom of modern Spain, a rival of England at the time).
Elizabeth had her cousin, Mary, put under house arrest when Mary started to do bad stuff to protestants (religion was a big thing during this time period). This is where "bloody Mary" comes from (or it might've also come from Elizabeth's half sister, also named Mary, Henry VIII's and Catherine's child, took the crown. Spain was a solid Catholic block, and so was, Mary). Elizabeth has Mary or Scots executed.

Impulsive and self willed, she spent the twelve years from the age of six in France. She was betrothed to the Dauphin of France when she was six and became Queen of France when the Dauphin became Francis II.
She returned to Scotland in 1560. In 1567 her subjects turned against her and she was compelled to abdicate her position of Queen of Scotland. She was kept prisoner in England for 19 years before one Catholic plot too many persuaded Elizabeth I that her cousin should be executed.
