Try rubbing alcohol before you try nail polish remover. Alcohol isn't as damaging to finishes as acetone is.

There is a new product out from Mr Clean called Magic Eraser. It does wonders on things like that. I have used it before to get sharpie off of my walls. You do have to be careful if you use it on flat paint though because it will remove it.
