it is cheaper for companies to have their people work overtime than to hire more people. People also work more to keep up with the Joneses or to just survive

Seriously? being totally serious, somebody
(probably me) could write you a book.
I think it's damaging to the psyche.
Then another will say they want things,
and another will say they have tremendous
medical bills,
and another will say they
lost a very good job and are working two
or three jobs to continue that lifestyle.
It isn't just in America, probably.
But a lot of countries don't have companies
that maximize production, give bonuses,
then turn around and the corporations
(?) lay people off after fulfilling contracts.
I don't know how old you may be, or if that
matters, but if you ever read Alvin Toffler,
he was like Nostradamus. It was
written in the 70's. I was too enamored
with fiction and poetry to read that. Future
Shock is the book. See what it has to say.

Everything has gone up in price so we have to work longer to pay our bills. It is the same reason you can't support a house on one income anymore. Either that or some are just work a-holics. I personally have two part time jobs. My husband works full time and takes all the over time he can get. We still have a hard time paying all of our bills. Most people are very materialistic and buy so much they can't afford to not work over time.

People can't make ends meet. There is a lot of working poor who work 2-3 full time jobs a week in order to live from pay check to pay check.

because the cost of living is up not to mention the cost of fuel, groceries, child care etc. All this raises and minimum wage doesn't rise fast enough to meet the cost, therefore longer hours at that pay are required to make up the difference.

Because wages have not kept pace with the cost of living, because "American" companies have been willing to cut benefits to workers to provide profits to shareholders and exorbitant pay packages to chief executives, because "American" companies have been more than willing to send our jobs overseas to India and China as people there will work for a fraction of our wage, and because our coworkers have lost their jobs to increase profits and we have to do their work as well as our own if we want to have a job at all.

Well, you need something to ask a silly question about, don't you? Thank working Americans for giving you a topic.

Because with the costs of EVERYTHING rising, we need to work more just to be able to afford the things in life we want... like homes and cars.

I don't really know but in my opinion it is because everything is now so expensive and people are trying to support their families.
