I would say much of it depends on lifestyle. Are you a student or working professional? That will determine the types of basics (pants, shirts, jackets) you'll need.
Do you have any female friends or coworker with a sense of style that you appreciate?
There is nothing wrong with approaching them in a friendly manner and asking if they could join you for an afternoon of shopping. I generally don't trust sales clerks, but that's just me. Most females are pretty open to sharing fashion advice.
Have you ever worn a particular color that seems to get you complements about your eyes? Think about that one! (For me, fuschia never fails. It's going to be a matter of a particular color that makes your eyes stand out and complements your skin tone.) If so, you can consult a color chart and find clothing in those tones. This site had some great advice just for men:

Hopefully this has given you some ideas on where to start... Best of luck!

since you are the president of a bank, and you have a 27 bedroom house, you must be like me, rich!

So buy some shirts from Ralph Lauren in white, light blue, and pink.

In Hollister, buy some nice long sleeve collared shirts in w/e ever color you like.

In Puma buy yourself some shirts for being in the house.

In gap buy pants in blue and black for work. And for casual buy some bermudas.

Hope this helped.

be your self dress so that you are comfortable because if you try to dress like someone else then you are not gonna get far.. you will be more noticed by everyone if you stick out. well that is my opinion dont change your self.....

I'd say buy a dress and come out of the closet.
