I believe that when people commit a crime and are sent to prison, they should not have greater privileges or a better lifestyle than many low-income, law-abiding citizens do. That is unfair. They should not be treated as guests in the prison system with many efforts to give them special amenities and privileges. It is prison, after all, and the experience in prison should be so unpleasant that they don't want to do anything to ensure their return once they are released.

That said however, prison is a horrible place, no matter how many privileges and amenities are there. Some people in prison are not hardened criminals who committed assault with a deadly weapon or who raped or killed or molested. Many are individuals who were just stupid. I know of two such individuals. One woman is imprisoned under California's 3 Strikes Law because she was arrested once for drug possession. The second time, she was in a waiting car while unbeknownst to her, her boyfriend, who told her he would be right back, got out of the car and robbed a house and she was arrested as an accessory to the crime even though she was unaware of her boyfriend's intent when he got out of the car. The third strike against her was because while she was not doing drugs at that time, there were drugs found in the car and she was found guilty because she was in that car. Under California's 3-strikes law, this woman will be spending her entire life behind bars, along with murderers and abusers, and very violent women. She has been in prison for quite some time now and is a very nice woman who has been clean for a long time.

Another person I know was throwing his life away when he was hanging out with the wrong crowd of people. His ex-wife still cared about him and they were working on reconciling. One day, he got beat up so badly that he ended up in the hospital emergency room and then sent home to recover. This was due to the people he associated with. On the night that he was assaulted and sent to the ER, a robbery took place and one of the folks he was associated with, gave the police his description and accused him of the crime, despite the fact that due to his injuries and the time the crime took place, there was absolutely no way he could have committed the crime. He was innocent. Still, he had a lousy public defender, and because there was circumstantial evidence at best, and no other possible suspects, he was sent to prison. This guy is a great guy who did stupid things. He became a Christian and is a model prisoner. While in prison, he watched a fellow prisoner in the next cell over, slit his own throat in suicide. As horrified as he was at having to witness that, the guards made him drag this guy's body out of the cell (along with another prisoner) and then take a hose (or bucket) and wash out the blood on the floor.

These two people I described made stupid mistakes and are serving time in prison. I don't believe any prisoner should have a cushy life, because they are in prison after all. The goal of prison is not only to keep criminals off the streets, but to show them that prison is not somewhere that they want to return to when they are released. Still, all prisoners are entitled to basic human rights, and as part of those rights, if they are not afforded something to do with their time, it will affect their psyche/mental state and the problems that landed them in prison to begin with will only magnify with time. I say, make prison uncomfortable, but respect the BASIC human rights of prisoners. Don't make it a country club atmosphere, but give them something to pass their time so they don't go stir-crazy or just plain crazy, because once these folks are released, they will be out amongst us once again.

I have to agree with the thought that Prison is not a holiday. It should be as tough and unpleasant as humanely possible.
No cable TV No work out equipment, For what so they come out bigger stronger bad guys??? Conjugal visits? So they can make more fatherless children? NOT! And complaining about lousy food accommodations etc..... You think??? IT"S PRISON DUDE!!! Where is the punishment? And for those that say it keeps the prisoners more controlled and passive...... Well yea, I guess it would. If life behind bars was awful, maybe there wouldn't be so many repeat offenders.

As for 25 year maximum sentences, that would mean Charles Manson would be a free man right now!! NO WAY!
If you willingly and violently take a life, you should forfeit your life.

First of all the occasions are not all that rare. Secondly, such a deliverance could hardly be called "miraculous". Thirdly, the permissive will of God and His omnipotence in no wise hinges on any doings of mankind. Fourth, why do you look for any kind of teaching in what is patently nonsense? But of paramount importance for anyone who has bothered to read the Bible, is the lesson of the Crucifixion, the conviction and execution of God's own innocent Son. The lesson is that we have an awful long way to go before we are either civilized or holy, or can make any claims about justice while busy with our own self-justification.

Yes! Couldn't agree with you more. The point of incarcerating people is to punish them, by taking them away from society. That should mean that you spend 23 hours of your 24 hour day in a 6x6 cell. No TV, no Internet, no modern appliances of any kind. Just you, a cot, and a toilet. That other one hour is spent doing something constructive that will benefit those of us that are not in jail.

A lot of lowlifes just go out and commit crimes so that they can get locked up because they have it better in there than out here.

if they are on death row, it doesnt matter because they will be dead soon. as long as they are away from civilized society i dont care what goes on in there. statistics show that alot of the budget ALWAYS go to prison systems anyway

no. i think prison should be a whole lot sh*ttier and make it an absolutley miserable experiance. but i also think if we did that then there should be no death penalty and the maximum prison sentence should be 25 years. if its so awful they will shape up and realize they dont ever want to go back there again.
