Oh my god, my mother refused to buy anything in a chain store; she hunted high and low for "different" clothes that would make us stand out. to this end, she succeeded beyond her wildest dreams.
the worst thing she ever made me wear was (now, bear in mind this was 1970 and my friends were wearing jeans and cheesecloth tops and long flowing skirts)A two piece dress and coat in lemon and brown; something that would suit a middle aged woman, not a 16 year old girl. The dress by itself was plain enough; lemon cotton, sleeveless; but the coat was brown cotton; no buttons, tied at the front with lemon ribbons; little slits at the side also tied with lemon ribbon; and wait for it; a giant lemon bow in the dress fabric sewed onto the back, just about a** height. To crown it all, I had to wear a hat..the hat was like a half melon shape, made of alternate strips of the lemon and brown stuff, coming to a point. It had to be held in place by an elastic strap---under my chin!!

The female tie!
I work at the front desk of a hotel. I once worked for a hotel that made us wear navy blue walking shorts year round in Illinois! Brr!! To top off the shorts, we had to wear a white dress shirt with a maroon cardigan with green and cream trim! It was about ten years ago for the short outfit, but I still have to wear the tie!

An undergarment called a "liberty bodice". Anything less liberating I have yet to find! As children, our mum made us wear these under our school shirts. They were made of thick cotton and very itchy against your skin. The idea was to prevent getting a chill or a cold. The only saving grace was they were not visible!

When I was in the 5th grade, my mom took me shopping for school clothes (now, keep in mind it was the 70's) and she made me go to JC Penney and she bought TWO pairs of the most God-awful polyester pants. They were the old lady kind with the elastic waist and the built in creases down the front. One pair was aqua green and the other pair was mental institution grayish-blue. They were absolutely heinous.
I cried every time she made me wear those things to school.

A hospital gown for an angioplasty operation. I wasn't anaesthesised and the first surgeon was a drop-dead-gorgeous young Irishman (Pierce Brosnan look-a-like). He casually flipped the rubbery green top-sheet to one side, then tossed the hospital gown with practiced precision over one thigh, exposing my left one utterly naked. But my modesty was preserved, bless him. He then dolloped icy cold alcohol gel on my inner thigh, which made me squeal, and I just felt utterly grateful that my slender thigh must have been the sexiest thing he'd seen all day. Then came the older surgeon (also rather tasty) and I watched the whole op on a TV screen. It was black and white, otherwise I'd have been sick all over the revolting hospital gown.

Knitted jumpers !!!!
Sandals !!!
Flared trousers !!!!! (back in the 1980's when it was a war-crime to be seen wearing them)
A dark blue school blazer (when the rules said black)
Trainers from the bargin bin, which when the cloth parts faded my dad 'went over' with blue felt tip.
SOME TIMES YOU LOOK BACK AND YOU CAN REALLY HATE YOUR PARENTS !!!!

Ew. When I was about 3 I had to wear this nasty dress for the church directory pictures. It was black, and the sleeves were SUPER poofy. It was kind of short, and had multi-colored little hearts all over it. It was the most akward, ugly thing to wear!

hand-me-down-clothes from my brothers.
i'm a girl & they all swamped me.
a purple parka springs 2 mind & i had 2 wear it as my mum refused 2 buy me a girly coat!
things u do when ur mum & dad r hard up, huh?
now grown-up, i regulally buy from charity shops,
re-cycling is good 4 the planet
& usually they're full of brand-new size 8-10s.
when i was a kid i would just have liked the choice!
