Does Iran tell the whole truth? Is taqqiyah a Shiite concept?

There are two sides to every story. However, I tend to believe the British on this one because Iran had a motive in capturing the British sailors to divert attention from the vote in the U.N. regarding sanctions for its enrichment of uranium. Well, the ploy did not work.....
Iran is in a heap of trouble.....

Iran is dealing with two issues. First, Iran has captured 15 British sailors. Second, Iran has refused to cooperate with the U.N. regarding cessation of uranium enrichment.

Military confrontation may be on the horizon.

Iran has elicited "confessions" from the 15 British sailors they captured and may put them on trial for espionage. The penalty for espionage in Iran is death.

“If it is proven that they deliberately entered Iranian territory, they will be charged with espionage. If that is proven, they can expect a very serious penalty since according to Iranian law, espionage is one of the most serious offences.” Espionage carries a death sentence.

Iran's detention of 15 Royal Navy personnel is "unjustified and wrong", Prime Minister Tony Blair has said. UK officials are waiting to be granted access to the HMS Cornwall staff, who were seized on Friday, and have not been told where the group are held.

"It simply is not true that they went into Iranian territorial waters and I hope the Iranian government understands how fundamental an issue this is for us," Mr Blair said.

"We have certainly sent the message back to them very clearly indeed. They should not be under any doubt at all about how seriously we regard this act, which is unjustified and wrong."

On March 23, 2007, U.S. and British officials said a boarding party from the frigate HMS Cornwall was seized about during a routine inspection of a merchant ship inside Iraqi territorial waters near the disputed Shatt al-Arab waterway.

The seizure of two Royal Navy inflatable boats took place just outside the mouth of the Shatt al-Arab waterway, a 125-mile channel dividing Iraq from Iran. Its name means Arab Coastline in Arabic, and Iranians call it Arvandrud - Persian for Arvand River. A 1975 treaty recognized the middle of the waterway as the border.

Iranians send arms to Iraqi extremists, including sophisticated roadside bombs. This week, two commanders of an Iraqi Shiite militia told The Associated Press in Baghdad that hundreds of Iraqi Shiites had crossed into Iran for training by the elite Quds force, a branch of Iran's Revolutionary Guard thought to have trained Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon.

Regarding enrichment of uranium, Iranian President Mahmaoud Ahmadinejad abruptly cancelled his appearance before the U.N. security council and in his stead, Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki Iran spoke. He indicated that Iran was willing to continue negotiations but without the precondition that uranium enrichment must be halted.

Mottaki said, "the world has two options to proceed on the nuclear issue: continued negotiations or confrontation. Choosing the path of confrontation ... will have its own consequences. "

The U.N. security council unanimously voted to expand sanctions on March 24, 2007.

The new resolution 1747 calls on Iran to comply fully with all previous UN resolutions and join negotiations to reach agreement so as to restore international confidence in the peaceful nature of its nuclear program. Full transparency and cooperation with the IAEA are required. Suspension of Iran’s banned nuclear activities will elicit the parallel suspension of sanctions. The package of incentives offered Tehran last year for its cooperation remains on the table.

I think Iran needs to be very, very afraid...and repentent. Soon. Or they'll be staring down the barrel of a very large, very powerful gun known as England and her allies, the Americans.

I believe that the British sailors were doing exactly what the news reported: trying to halt the transport of stolen vehicles aboard ships in Iraqi waters. Whether their ship drifted into Irani waters or not have yet to be determined, I believe.

The Iranians have reported that the 15 sailors have "confessed" to spying on Iran and THAT I find to be ludicrous. Arguably a country of very accomplished spies, the Brits don't need to use a full sized navy vessel to know what the Iranians are up to. The charges are bogus and the Iranians are flirting with disaster.

While I could have done without the war in Iraq, I have held out hope for it's people that our soldiers and our misquided government would eventually get them settled and on the road to freedom and, perhaps, a full blown democracy, if they so wish.

I have no such hopes for Iran -- having witnessed the Iranian hostage crisis wherein 52 Americans were held hostage for 444 days in Tehran -- and I wouldn't mind if we wiped them right off the face of the earth in the name of our good friends, the Brits.

Iran has laid claim to more territorial water than has been recognized by the UN for many years. The English sailors were in international waters according to the UN's guidelines. They were conducting a lawful UN sanctioned search of an Iranian vessel when they were taken. The Iranian government is incapable of telling the truth.

whats Iran's rand ? And whats Iran truth or not they seized British sailors , they claim the sailors were in Iran's waters , does anyone think that there telling the truth ,depends if you belive British American goverment , these sailors could be used in a ploy to widen the confict ,I m sure that British troops aren't going to allow their people to be held by Iran for long and America is going to back up its Allie in crime and use force within Iran's borders to free the sailors . Now yes I belive that the Iranians should release the sailors in the face of a superior military machine but it will use these people as a bargaining point as to further their unrealistic agenda in a nuclear iran

does it really matter what they tell us? They will tell us what will give the least amount of damage to them, and promote their cause... just as any normal person would do with anything that happened in their personal life.. Politics are alot like highschool... a bunch of rumors but noone really knows the truth. The truth at this point is irrelevant, its the outcome that is important.

They did not arrest them. They captured/kidnapped them. Those sailors were in Iraqi waters when the Iranians surrounded them and forced them to go into Iranian waters.
