The stock market is a creature in and of itself. At times it makes sense and at other times, no one can explain why it acts the way it does. What is clear is that, over the long run, the stock market will climb and climb faster than almost any other traditional investment. With that said, there are also moments (that sometimes last years) when the value of the stock market gets out of whack with the underlying companies and with the economy. I’ll try to explain my views below.
How the stock market works.
How stocks are valued.
Why the stock market is a good investment (in the long term).
Why the stock market gets out of whack with reality.
Recommended ways to invest in the stock market.

The best book I can recommend is by Suze Orman, "The Road to Wealth". But you will have to buy it, probably can get a good deal on Amazon because it is not a new book.
Also, sites like Charles Schwab are great for learning. Also, the magazines like Business Week, Smart Money, etc., are great training grounds.
Make sure you understand you cannot believe everything you read about the stock market to be true from brokerage houses who are trying to sell their wares. For example, a mutual fund manager may be interviewed in a magazine touting his fund. Don't believe how wonderful it is, check it out at several sites, do your homework, it pays off. In Business Week Dec/Jan 2006/07 issue, they show what to look for when it comes to stocks.
There are stocks, bonds, mutual funds and now ETF's which are great, no major fees and you can invest in a wide range of things that trade like stocks. There is a lot to learn, so go slow and invest wisely. You also need to understand the importance of timing your buys/sells, what is happening in the economy, etc.
