My ex girlfriend is using this as a reason for trying not to give me proper access to my son and I am now getting supervised visits. I'm 21 and my kid is only 6 months old so I don't think this makes any difference.

I guess it depends on the type of influence you plan to be to him. Are you going to try to tell him (when he is older) that it is everyone else's fault that you are/were there? or will you suck it up and admit it was because of your own actions? Do you plan to teach him that he needs to work for the things he wants, or how to steal/harm/kill for them?

It seems self evident that a child raised in a home where one or more parent lead a criminal life style would convey that lifestyle on to their children. Much like a child raised in an alcoholic home is more socially predisposed towards alcoholism, even adopted children without the parents DNA, than those raised in non alcoholic homes.

However, many people for many reasons end up in jail for a one reason or another because of an incident rather than a lifestyle. And therefore, it is a leap to assume that this would in any way predispose their children towards a criminal lifestyle.

Equally or more importantly, studies have found that children raised with out a father influence in their lives are more likely to have criminal and gang problems.

Not really- it depends on wether or not the person in jail learned what they did is wrong and taught the son not to make that same mistake. If you've been in jail- I can see her concern, otherwise- get a lawyer.
