It's bad practice and really awkward if people aren't expecting you. I would call first.

Well it depends if you know that they are not busy or have a good assumption that they aren't then not really. But if you see a few cars in front of their house than usual you should avoid. I know it's awkward to call and just say hey I'm coming over on the phone but it's the best way so that people won't think you are rude.

I think it's bad to go over unannounced...call first and it's always nice to bring something; wether it's something to snack on or something to drink. It's polite. That's what my parentals taught me!

It all depends on the relationship you have with that person(s).
If you, or anyone person(s) in that household are in anyway
feeling uneasy about this situation, then, yes, it is bad policy
to arrive at someones doorstep without prior notification.
