I need help with my trigonometry homework.

My maths book says that to find out the length of the opposite side of a right-angled triangle, with an adjacent side of 25m, and an angle of 42 degrees, I must type 25*tan42 into my calculator to get the answer. I did this and got an answer of 57.28, however the book says that the answer should be 22.5!! What am I doing wrong??

Your spelling is fine.
Also 25*tan 42 does equal 22.5 on my calculator.
So you are doing the problem correctly.
I think your calculator must be in radian mode.
Check this and and put it in degree mode if necessary.
We know 25*tan 42 has to be less than 25
because tan 42 < tan 45, which equals 1.
Update: My guess was right. 25* tan 42,
i.e., 42 RADIANS, is indeed 57.28(approx.).
