It seems like almost everybody assumes humans are the ultimate species in the universe. There is the belief that God created humans and gave them dominion over the rest of creation, but even many people who subscribe to evolution operate with the assumption that evolution led up to humanity and then stopped. If evolution is real, then we are also subject to it. Do you think this assumption is as common as it seems to me? What do you think about evolution and humans? What are the implications of our beliefs--either way--for our stewarship toward the planet? I know I'm asking a lot here, but I just want to know what you think.

There're several beliefs and theories concerning human origin.
Scientifics and atheists are more likely to think and believe on Darwin's theory than bible or any sacred book.
Every single opinion is personal, every point of view has a reason.
However, none of them have enough sources to prove that we come from monkeys or a God created us.
What fact or source of information prooves that we come from monkeys? maybe we have similar characteristics but if our DNA had came from monkeys maybe he'd had a very curved back and , besides, we would still be living [or having relatives that live] at zoos or jungles, don't you think?

Most people who understand evolution do NOT think that it has stopped. Evolution is an extremely slow process. You often cannot see the effects in a dozen generations or more. Humankind will continue to evolve.

As for 'stewardship', we have none. We are simply the dominant species at present and have developed tools that give us the power to create and destroy.

Most scientist no longer adhere to the theory of evolution. So many facts were falsified in the last 40 years or so to bolster the evolution theory that it is difficult to believe any of it for sure. I do believe in God, and He did tell Adam to tend to the garden. Yes, it is our responsibility to care for the planet. Yes, according to the bible, we are the "ultimate species" it's just that most of us do not act like it ot get carried away with it.

If we ever did disappear from the planet, I would guess that the ants or bees would take over.

Heh.
As long as humans believe they are the "ultimate" species, we will never learn the truth.
True knowledge comes when you understand you know nothing at all.
