We bought a siberian dwarf Hamster awhile ago, and this darn thing hardly goes up in his wheel, the bottom of his cage is plastic along with top, sides are medal white bars with gate in the front of the side. Why does this thing insist on biting the medal all night long, it sounds like hell, and keeps us up all night long...we have cats, so we have to keep him in out room with door shut.

You need to put him in a glass tank. He will eventually chew his way out of that plastic bottom. It would also be harder for the cats to get to him.

Hamsters, and all rodents like to chew on things, it helps keep their teeth ground down, and they just have this thing for chewing, kinda like a baby when it's teething. Try buying it some wood sticks and chewy toys and see if that doesn't work. If not, maybe think of getting a glass cage for it. Also, hamsters are known for their ability to jail break, so I'm sure he's just trying to chew his way out of the cage as well. They are nocturnal, so if it bothers you that much, I'd say give the hamster away and don't get any more rodents for pets. I have had a lot of them, hamsters, guinea pigs, ferrets, and others. They are all the same in that respect, and you either get used to it, or don't.

If you drip a drop of veggie oil where the stand and the wheel connect, it will cut down on the noise the wheel makes considerably. You are going to have to take one or the other here...if there is no wheel your hamster will have no way to run out its energy, so it will chew on the bars AND vice-verse. Try the oil... (no WD-40 please, its toxic)
Also...supply your little guy with some bedding other then wood chips, like shredded old t-shirt, that fuzzy stuff you can buy at the pet store OR toilet paper tubes. They love those things.
Try wood blocks as well...they will make less noise when being chewed on then the metal bars.
Good luck!

I'm sorry to answer since I don't know 100%...
I'm thinking because he's a rodent he needs something hard to chew on because if I remember correctly rodents teeth always grow so they need to 'chew them down' to a comfortable length.
When we had rabbits (seems like 100 years ago) they always chewed on the wooden boxes that they slept in... we put in sticks because we didn't know any better.
Maybe ask the pet store for products or ideas for your hamster...it would occupy his time too and alleviate some boredom and help his teeth.
Again, sorry I don't have a solid answer but at least consider the possibility of letting him chew on something either more healthy or more acceptable.
Good luck!

You need to give him a better environment, and he's also lonely and probably exhibiting nervous behaviors. You can put in things like cardboard toilet paper rolls or small cardboard boxes for him to chew on. Pieces of wood he can climb on are good. Anything that won't make him sick and that he can climb into and chew on will give him something to do besides chew on the metal bars.

if he chews on the metal then its natural thats how they dull their teeth down so they're not tusks. my advice: get a salt whell they help, you could also get a small cage thingy that flows electricity through it. its not enough to really shock them but enough to let them know to stop. if eats eating the plastic bottom line it with newspaper or get a glass cage
