You could argue the Russia was still medieval in the 18th century. They still had "serfs" and a society much like England in medieval times.

No, not at all. Catherine II "the great" of Russia was an 18th century monarch. The middle ages ended some time in the 15th or 16th centuries. Your teacher was probably:
A: Basing his/her assumptions on the Name (number) the Adjective name format, which was very medieval.
B: Was referring to a Catherine II other than the one above mentioned, or
C: Hasn't a clue about medieval or Russian history (She was a major figure in Russia, not a Washington, but at least a Lincoln or FDR, so to speak.)

If you mean Catherine the Great of Russia, no, she came much later. I woudl ask you teacher for suggestions, especially as "Medieval Times" is interpreted to have ended at different times by different historians.

No,Catherine II was born 5-2-1729 and died 11-6-1796.

She reigned as Empress of Russia from 6-28-1762 until her death.
