I think the current surge and the change in strategy from the whack-a-mole approach to the seize, clear and hold plan will be successful provided Democrats in the Houses don't cut our troops' legs out from under them as they're currently attempting.

One of Bush's biggest mistakes with this whole Iraq war has been the decision not to make it about numbers. If the White House had been more forthcoming about the outcomes of all the battles and fire-fights, the public would still believe in the mission. There have been dozens of battles where we lose two or three troops but kill or capture literally hundreds and hundreds of the enemy. But you'll only read a 4-inch item about it from AP online.

Neither of these is a victory.

Even the Roman Empire didn't have a lasting 'victory' by conquering, installing a friendly local govt, and occupying.
