This is about that baby polar bear, Knut, in Germany. Do we know why the mother rejected the baby? What are the reasons animals would do that?

Not only animal, but human mothers also sometimes reject their babies. Maybe they're stressed out beyond their ability to cope. Maybe they don't feel maternal. Maybe something about that baby isn't a good feeling for them. Animals in captivity, especially, are most likely to behave in unnatural ways because they're not in their ordinary environment.

Animals usually abandon their offspring if there is not enough food or water to support both, or if there is something wrong with the offspring, the mother will usually abandon it, as well.
