While moving the wind keeps them open allowing you to throw yourself out easier than having to fight the wind resistance with a conventional door.

if a car door isn’t shut properly, it can pop open while the vehicle is moving. In a car with traditional doors, this usually isn’t that much of a problem, but with so-called “suicide doors,” the rear door would not only pop open, the force of the wind could also tear it off. In those days, safety belts were rare, so it’s not difficult to imagine how suicide doors got their name.

If the door comes open, the wind would blow it wide open, and back then you didn't have seat belts, if you tried to grab the door, it would pull you out of the car and therefore, suicide doors.

First off, I like the style of those doors. I am disapointed that they don't make them any longer. They are called this because one could easily jump out of the moving car just by stepping out, instead of the way the doors are hung today.

Probably because if you jump out of a car with those rear opening doors it would be very bad for your health. Maybe in the early days people sometimes tried to end it all that way.
