Cingular / AT&T is not one of the companies that is good about unlocking phones. They won't do it usually. I've included some articles and resources about this at the end of this post. As a former Cingular customer, I speculate that this is because their service is so poor that they are afraid that people will go to other companies - which they would. I switched to T-Mobile and found that they were not just helpful, they almost seemed thrilled to help me unlock my phone so that I could use it on someone else's service in Europe. They even gave me names and web addresses so that I could shop around for prices. I ended up buying a prepaid T-Mobile SIM card in Germany despite that. They were confident that I would stay with them. I have.

I'm sad that the iphone is only available on Cingular but that means I won't be getting one anytime soon. There are companies that will unlock your phone for you - for a fee - but I have no idea how good they are. There is some debate over the legality of it but I have a hard time understanding how a phone company could claim rights over the phone you purchased. Also, evidently in some cases it may void the warranty on your phone. So, do a little research before you purchase and make that expensive leap. Personally, I'm waiting to see what falls out first.

Good luck!
