I'm trying to connect my laptop to my main desktop PC with a crossover cable but not having much luck so far. I've give them static IP adresses which is working fine, they can ping one another no problem but when i go into 'my network places' the shared files aren't there (I've enabled sharing on the hard drives of both computers and 'file and print sharing' is installed and enabled). When I go to 'view workgroup computers' i can see the computer i want to connect to but when i try and explore it, it says it's not accessible and to check i have permission (I'm the only user account on both computers). What am I doing wrong?

You also need to configure your computers firewall to allow the network connection. The computer you cant access is were the firewall is blocking you.

If you can ping the other computer than probably its not the firewall. It sounds like and authentication problem. This is easiest to overcome by mapping a drive because when you map a drive you can choose what credentials to use.

For example->

#1 go to windows explorer and click on tools/map drive.
#2 choose any drive letter and then type in \\othercomputername\sharename you could also use \\othercomputername\c$ or replace c$ with d$ or whatever the letter is of the drive on the other computer that has the data you want to get to.
#3 click on "different username" and enter in the information in the following format -> (username = othercomputername\logon name you use to logon to the other computer) (password= the password you use to log onto the other computer) It is important in the computer name that you use the format of computername\username the \ is necessary.

This should work. Otherwise if you are using XP home or have the auto login without password required then you can either enable classic login or easier would be to make sure the guest account is not disabled and make sure the that guest has access to shares you created. This doesnt always work though and to troubleshoot in the event it didnt work would take a few more questions and answers. The first method should always work.

Good luck.

Hi, I had this problem as well. What I did was ensure that my desktop was shared as well so the other pc could access all the files that I had shortcuts to on the desktop of my main pc.

This was in addition to sharing drive C.

Think I had to set up remote access as well. Go in to properties on your LAN settings and make sure you have got ftp ticked and remote desktop ticked in advanced settings and in your allow list on your firewall settings.

You try to check the firewall settings on both computer, If It was enabled, you should disable that. Then check the connection on both computer by : Start > Run > \\192.168.10.1 (example)
