Since the end of World War II, the Philippine economy has had a mixed history of growth and development. Over the years, the Philippines has gone from being one of the richest countries in Asia (following Japan) to being one of the poorest.

Following the epic rise of China into the world's economy I would disagree with saying that the Philippines has become the "Trashbag" of the Tiger Economies, but it has got a bit of raw deal purely because its hasn't lived upto the standards that was expected of it. Its arrived at the lower end of the economic scale because of events out of its control - it would never have brought anything on itself. Because of the fact it couldn't keep up with China/Japan, its sunk into its current situation.

Having said that though, it has been earmarked as part of the N11 (along with Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, South Korea, Turkey and Vietnam) as the next 11 countries to become the newer developed countries and the next big economic boom is expected from these countries. The economy is also still growing at 5-6% per annum, and it has had the lowest ever budget deficit in 2006 at $1.27bn.
