your engine light should not be on because of the air conditioner, I would say you have another problem, get your computer codes read and then you will have a better idea of whats going on.

only if the alternator is not charging,
the onboard computer shut off the A/C and turn on the check engine light.
connect the OBD scanner ,should give You alternator not charging.
check under hood for missing belt.(or broken)

See what the error code is. Try going to a place like autozone and have them run the codes for you, free.
