I always think it's best to pronounce place names as closely as possible to how they are pronounced at that place.
So, no. I ran like a little girl is wrong. The I is pronounced more like in Bin Laden, but with less stress. And the ran is pronounced rahn. As far as getting the accent right, I have no idea.

The Iranians pronounce Iran like EErun.
The Iraqis pronounce Iraq like Uh rakqk.
Iran and Iraq are both spelled with the letter "I" in English but in Arabic the letters are different.
Iran is ايران The vowel is ﺍ alef ﻱ ye
Iraq is العراق (Al Iraq) the vowel is ﻉ ain

Eurpean pronunciation of the "i" is usually as a strong "ee". Thus, the correct "worldly" pronunciation is "eeraun."
But, Americans tend to butcher foreign accents and pronunciations anyway.
