Spouse beating comes from unresolved anger. One is trying to control the other. When that control breaks down the person resorts to violence. Alcohol can speed the process up but it is not always involved. Today many women beat men in America. But it is secret because it is to humiliating to the man.

As a former bar tender I can unequivocally say alcohol is directly related to domestic abuse and physical violence in general.
As a former toker, I can unequivocally say a stoned person is too mellow to care enough to beat their spouse and too paranoid to believe it is not themselves who is in trouble.
Besides, if he beat his wife, who will make him some munchies?
