It isn't upside down, it's backwards, so you can read it in the rear view mirror while driving and get out of the way quickly.

As some of the other answerers have pointed out, it's not written upside down. It's mirror image. Obviously it is so that when you see it in your rear view mirror you wont think it's an ECNALUBMA, which is French for 'Ice Cream Truck.'

Before they thought of doing that, an ambulance with it's whirring colorful lights and blaring sirens would come up behind vehicles frantically trying to get by to the scene of an accident. It was common for drivers to glance in their mirrors and say 'Aww, **** man! It's another one of those damn French Vanilla Trucks tail-gating me again. Hey! Check this out, buddy!" ...and the driver would proceed to flip the paramedic the bird.

Now that they write the word 'ambulance' backwards, there is no mistake about it when one sees it coming up behind them on the highway. However, when the vehicle is parked and viewed without a mirror, French children on hot days are often turned away by paramedics who are busy trying to save lives.

It's not written upside down, it's written backwards (mirror image). That's because for cars in front of it, when the driver looks into their rear-view mirror they see a mirror image of the word, and now it looks to them as if it was normal. It's to make people in front of the ambulance get out of the way faster.

AMBULANCE(Spelled on the front hood of a EMS Vehicle) is backwards so the people not smart enough to just hear th sirens can look in their rearview and see that it is an ambulance and pull over to the right and let it pass thru.

OR someone was drunk when they were spelling ambulance(Just Kidding) Lol.

Hope this helps.

You mean backwards, and that is so drivers in front of the ambulance can read the word AMBULANCE in their rear view mirrors and give way.
