As to the answerer above me, Miniatures and Shetlands are not the same thing. Miniatures can not bare the weight of an adult or even most children, and even Shetlands shouldn't be asked to carry that sort of bulk. It's more than just weight, an adult rider would upset the horse's natural balance. Shetlands are primarily children's ponies these days, or cart ponies. Miniatures can be used for driving as well. They're also shown in hand in halter classes and even over fences (free jumping, of course).

We have a miniature horse. We don't ride on his back but we have a carriage that he pulls. that we purchased from buggy.com they are so much fun. You need to keep in mind that you have to handle them a little different riding in a carriage that you do on their back. You have more to control. Lesson might a plus, because from taking lesson even though you already know how to ride that could be a lot of fun for you and your miniature pal. Good luck and have fun

Horses are like vermin...they need to be eradicated.
There are several Horse Eradication programs going on in your State. Call your representative, and they'll give you more information.

no! they aren't bred to be ridden, even by small children. any weight that is more than 1/2 it's weight, or even less, could cripple a minature. ponies can carry adults, though- how else could they be trained?
